about us

Based in Brisbane, Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts is the leading Indigenous Performing Arts Company, producing contemporary performances that present the stories of indigenous Australia nationally & internationally.

Kooemba Jdarra, Queensland’s only full time professional Indigenous Theatre Company, is dedicated to providing an avenue for the artistic expressions of Indigenous culture, identity and self-determination through the performing arts. The company was incorporated in 1993, the International year of Indigenous People, and maintains a strong commitment to professionalism and excellence in the arts.

Kooemba's Vision

Kooemba solidified its position as Australia’s leading developer in Indigenous works in 2007, with a strong program that included The Mack, by Sam Watson & Whispers of this Wik Woman, by Fiona Doyle.  2008 is set to be an even more exciting year for Kooemba Jdarra with the company producing a joint production with the Brisbane Powerhouse in June. As Australia’s leading producer of contemporary Indigenous Theatre and one of only three Indigenous Theatre Companies in Australia, Kooemba Jdarra plays a pivotal role in providing a platform for the development and expression of Indigenous artists, and is a major contributor to the Indigenous artistic community both within Queensland and nationally. Kooemba Jdarra has delivered community programs by travelling to the top end of Queensland down to the cold coastline of Tasmania with numerous schools, detention centres, youth groups and organisations taking part. Kooemba Jdarra’s work has been seen by audiences in the Netherlands, UK, Korea, and Switzerland.

Kooemba Jdarra is a major developer and employer of new, emerging and established Indigenous artists, both professional and community. Kooemba Jdarra has nurtured the professional development of over 40 Indigenous actors, developed skills and creative opportunities for over 25 new Indigenous writers, designers & directors.

Kooemba is a not-for-profit organisation that receives core funding through the Department of Communications Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA), Australia Council, and Arts Queensland. Kooemba Jdarra also receives ongoing support from the Indigenous Community.
